Dressin' Up for Spring & Summer

I haven’t been extremely crafty lately, but I still remember my way around a sewing machine. One of my favorite things to do around Spring and Summer is make some super cute clothes for my girls. Luckily, my local Walmart store has a pretty nice fabric section, and I especially love their selection of smocked fabrics! There is always something cute on hand! My favorite thing about using the smocked fabrics is that they are typically already hemmed for me!

Check out this quick and easy way to make some dresses/tops for your kids, or even yourself!

First, measure around your chest area, just above your bust. Choose whichever fabric you want to use, and measure out the length you measured around yourself. add about a half inch to the length and cut the fabric in a straight line.

Next, fold the fabric in half with the colored sides inside the fold. Sew up the edges about 1/4 of an inch seam. Pull your fabric right side out. It’s just about that simple!

Now, you can leave your fabric like this, and make it a tube top, or you can straps to turn it into a tank or halter top! I like to sew ribbon to the front center of the top to make it a tie halter top like in the photo above. You can use ribbon that goes with your fabric, or you can make shoulder straps. The length of the fabric makes it either a dress or a top. Now that’s simple.

These are my favorite tops to make. They’re simple, inexpensive and fun! I let my girls choose the fabric and ribbon that they want to use for their tops.

This year, we’ll be making a few tops, including Tinkerbell and Disney Princesses. They are super excited!
