Walmart's Sustainability Efforts

We love the Summer and Fall Harvest seasons! The fresh produce here in town is always plentiful, and the colors are amazing! With the way we have changed our eating habits in our home, we have really been drawn to more natural, organic and especially local produce. We make frequent trips to our local farm. We are very lucky to have an excellent farm just a mile or so up the street, and many of our meals are set around what fresh produce I can get from them during the Summer.

As a Walmart Mom, sometimes I get to attend special events and a couple of weeks ago, I was offered an insider’s chance to see what Walmart is doing to become more sustainable. Walmart held a meeting that I was able to attend via the internet, and I learned so much about what the various divisions of Walmart is planning, or is already doing to be more sustainable, as well as listened to some farmers who got to give their input to the processes that are currently in place. Some of the statistics were quite surprising, and it made me think even more about the local farmers here in North Carolina.

I would really love to see more of our local farmers’ produce in stores. Not only would it help our local economy, but the produce would taste better, usually last longer, and have more of the nutrients in it that is so often lost in the time it takes to ship from wherever it came from. Walmart has promised to make a huge commitment and has set some pretty high goals for the company. Some of those goals include: • to create zero waste • to be powered 100% by renewable energy • to sell products that sustain people and the planet. I think they can do it! With the help and suggestions of the consumers, they will be able to meet their goals. Walmart is also committing to training local farmers to create less waste, and encourage the production of food with more renewable resources. I really can’t wait to see more of my local produce in stores!

I am a participant in the Walmart Moms program.  Join me and my fellow Walmart Moms (Chic Shopper Chick, Sophistishe, Green Your Decor, Lille Punkin, Frugal Upstate) as we talk about what we look forward to with Walmart’s Sustainability Efforts. Walmart has provided me with compensation to blog about Walmart’s Sustainability Commitments.  Participation in this program is voluntary. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.
