Below are some tips that Shea Moisture sent over to help any of you mommies that are battling eczema with your little ones!  Of course, you may need to consult a physician for any extra help!

Eczema Tips for Mommies

Your family’s skin may need some extra TLC during certain times of year, due to the extreme heat of summer, allergy season in the spring, or the bitter cold of winter. Eczema often rears its itchy head as temperatures change. Taking the time to understand this skin condition and simplify your family’s skincare regimen will yield positive results. Follow these tips to keep skin healthy and free of irritation.

Find out what’s causing the itchy. Although eczema can be inherited, it may also be triggered by external irritants such as detergent, fragrance and food. Symptoms may be caused by eggs, wheat, milk, fish and nuts. So, do some mom sleuthing and notice exactly when symptoms flare.

Eliminate the scratchy trigger. If you’re able to locate what may be irritating your baby or children’s skin, eliminate it from your environment, whenever possible. Whip out your chic reading glasses when you’re shopping, and become a label reader for everything you buy for your household.

It worked at Woodstock. Think old-school, and use cloth wipes with water, as many commercial wet wipes contain synthetic ingredients (such as artificial fragrance) that may trigger your child’s eczema. When you need to use a wet wipe, rinse it with water before wiping your baby.

Rub-a-dub au naturel. Sulfates are detergent-grade surfactants that make body washes, soaps and shampoos lather. They can be drying and may worsen symptoms of eczema. Opt for a sulfate-free soap or wash, such as SheaMoisture Raw Shea, Chamomile & Argan Oil Baby Wash & Shampoo, and use with a bamboo or 100% cotton wash cloth. Bathe the kids in cooler water, instead of hot, which can also dry out skin and cause eczema symptoms to flare.

Oil it up, baby. Add a couple of drops of chamomile oil to your children’s bath water, which helps to soften and soothe skin irritation. Then lock in moisture with SheaMoisture Raw Shea, Chamomile & Argan Head-to-Toe Baby Lotion. It doesn’t contain parabens, phthalates, petrolatum or other synthetic ingredients, so it’s gentle and hydrating for delicate skin.

Dress the little ones in layers. When your child is too warm, they may be more prone to flare-ups due to sweating. Dress the kiddos in light, breathable layers in cotton and bamboo. Oh, so fashionable, comfy and eco-friendly.

Love the aloe. Aloe Vera is a great secret superfood for keeping skin and body in tip top shape. Add it to smoothies for your family in the morning. The kids are none the wiser, and it’s your secret that they receive extra nutrients, while helping to nourish their skin from the inside.

Bust out the first aid for flare-ups. Go old school with chamomile tea as a compress on inflamed areas, which aids in soothing irritation and calming skin. Follow with a light layer of lotion to provide a moisture barrier, while still allowing skin to breathe so it can heal
