Editorial: Motrin's new ads missed the mark…

Well.. maybe not. Maybe they have done what they set out to do… Get the attention of all of the mommies out there that have ever carried their baby(ies).

Their latest Motrin IB ad claims that “babywearing” is just a fashion statement, and that parents are just going along with the crowd when they carry their babies on their person. Last time I checked, carrying your baby was not just so you could “Look like an official mom” as the ad so claims. It was to soothe your baby, to keep them comforted, and not to mention piece of mind for the parent. I showed the ad to Daddy, and he thought it was just as offensive as I do.

When my twins came home from the hospital, Daddy put them both in a Moby Wrap, and proudly carried them around, to bond with them, and to give me a break. They were sound asleep. When I went shopping with them.. I often didn’t have a choice! I couldn’t push a cart and a double stroller through department stores, and certainly couldn’t push a double stroller through many of the stores in the mall. More often than not, I had one in single stroller (or cart), and one in my Baby Bjorn. They loved it. I loved it. Most of all, I could shop, and not have to worry about them in a crowd. I was actually sad the day I sold off our Baby Bjorn carriers because they didn’t fit any more.

On to the Children’s Motrin ad, where mom talks about “killing for some sleep” or being committed because they said what’s on their minds.. You’ve got to see it.. if you can’t.. Here’s what this one says.. I haven’t seen a written transcript of it yet so i thought I’d take this one on.

I would kill to get some sleep right now

Seriously, TRY ME

OK, So I don’t REALLY MEAN THAT

But sometimes I SECRETLY think it

If all of us MOMS said exactly what was on our MINDS

when dealing with our KIDS’ HIGH FEVERS

You might as well COMMIT US

actually, that’s NOT a BAD idea

AT least it would be QUIET

LISTEN, all we really want is for our kids to FEEL GOOD AGAIN

to take that fever down,

way down

and then our CRAZY little kids

can go back to being their CRAZY little selves

drawing ON THE WALLS, and sticking their HANDS in the toilet.

I understand where they “think” they were coming from. But their ads could’ve been done so much more tastefully. Instead of saying that wearing their baby was a fashion statement, they could’ve said something more to the effect of, “We understand the pain you get from carrying your child.” And although many of us probably could use a little quiet time, especially when our kids are sick, I’ve not once thought being committed to a mental health facility was better than seeing my kids through a cold! IF anything, my girls sleep the most when they’re sick! It’s when they’re not sick that I need the headache relief! :)  Motrin.. Next time, you may want to check with some moms who know before you embarrass yourself with another ad campaign like this one…

Motrin.com’s latest ads have many of the mommy bloggers/twitterers in a rage, and rightly so! If you haven’t checked it out yet, go to Motrin.com and watch their ad about babywearing. Oh, and while you’re there, check out the Children’s Motrin ad too! I’ll bet you’ll be just as upset as we all are. Feel free to pass on your feelings to Motrin by contacting them, and follow the conversation on Twitter, #motrinmoms.

If you’ve checked out Motrin.com, and the ads are no longer up, you can find a transcript of the Motrin IB ad, along with an awesome video that Katja of Ladybug Landings has put together of as many tweets as she could fit into a 10 minute YouTube video of mom’s reacting to the Motrin ads on her site.

  1. I agree the voice of the woman was annoying however, I am not offended by their ad in the slightest. It’s marketing, that’s all. Yes, they could have used a different approach, but they didn’t. I have a 21m old son. I carried him in the Bjorn carrier for his first year and now I use a Mei Tei carrier. I use it a lot because I go to estate sales to buy vintage clothing and that’s the only way I can take him in with me. I do think that carrying a toddler on your back can be heavy at times, but if Motrin wants to market their product that way, that’s their choice. I don’t get enough pain from carring my child to have to take OTC medication for it. It’s really silly when you think about this whole thing.

  2. From a marketing perspective, there are lots of lessons to be learned from this. Namely, that all companies must realize the influence of Twitter and that we are not a 9-5 society. Bloggers don’t stop on the weekends, so PR people can’t stop either. Check out http://www.costadevault.com/blog for more lessons. Let us know what you think about this from a marketing perspective.

  3. Motrin Sucks! haha……okay really i didn’t view the ad or read it, but I don’t take anything by that company for the simple fact that their product makes my stomach hurt so bad i can’t see straight. it’s only their ibuprofen that affects me that way too. weird.
