Pumpkin carving is a tradition here at the MommyBrain household. We love to try out new images and techniques every year. Walmart makes it so easy to carve your favorite images into your pumpkins too! They have everything you need from designs and carving kits to power tool accessories from Dremel that will help you get through the most delicate parts of your picture. This year, they even have really cool scoops, like this Deluxe Pumpkin Scraper Scoop, that are easy to grip, and can scrape all of those pumpkin guts out!
Over the years, we’ve learned some really cool tricks to preserve our pumpkins after cutting them. We can’t wait till the last minute to do our carvings, otherwise we might just forget and run out of time! We try to do our carvings a couple of days before Halloween so that we are ready to go for the big day! Here are a few preservation techniques that we have found to work pretty well:
- Prevent your pumpkin from drying out by coating the cut edges of your carving with petroleum jelly.
- To help prevent your pumpkin from rotting early, spray your pumpkin with water, cover it with plastic wrap then store it in the refrigerator when it’s not on display.
- Soak or spray the pumpkin with water mixed with a little bit of bleach. This will help ward off mold and kill insects for a longer preservation.
- Place the silica gel packets that you get in shoes, toys, or other items, inside the pumpkin to help keep it fresher.
I love seeing everyone else’s pumpkins at Halloween. In one night, you can see everything from a serious pumpkin carver to a little child’s first pumpkin carving. It’s always a ton of fun!
