October DIY- Trick or Treat Bags

We all know about the cute plastic pumpkins in various colors, and the old pillowcase, or plastic shopping bag, but why not make something that the kids can use year after year? Let them personalize it too!

Did you know that Walmart has very recently brought back the fabric department to many of their stores?!?!?! I was excited to hear the news, since Walmart had always been my first choice of places to shop for fabric. I love to sew when I have the time, and some of the fastest things I’ve made are tote bags. While great for shopping, I thought they’d be awesome for Trick or treating! I had a pattern that I purchased a while back at Walmart, Simplicity Crafts # 9963, and found a simple pattern for a decent sized tote bag. I chose to do tote bag C without the clear plastic pockets. It was simple and a good size to carry the treats the kids would get. All I needed was 1 1/8 yard of our favorite Halloween themed fabric, 3 yards of heavyweight fusible interfacing and a 9″x18″ sheet of Fun Foam for the base. We didn’t need to get too fancy.. so we went with the basics.  Walmart’s Fabric Section has some really cute fabrics right now, so you could even bring your kids to the store to pick out their own fabric!

Follow your pattern when cutting fabric, and sew as directed… It’s really easy! If you have an embroidery machine, you can add names, or let the kids have fun with fabric paints and the fabric puffy paints. If you really want to get creative, get light solid fabrics and use stamps, or tie dye to make your own designs on the fabric! Have fun with it! All products mentioned above are available at your local Walmart Craft/Fabric section. Fabric patterns varies by store.
