Review: Delitefuls Seafood Meals

The Walmart Moms were recently given the opportunity to try some new, healthy seafood meals from Delitefuls, available exclusively at Walmart, and I just had to tell you about them.

The Delitefuls Seafood Meals are sold in packages of two single serving meals. Each meal is under 250 calories, and all meals are 100% Natural and contain NO preservatives. Their patented Smart Pouch technology allows the food to be baked rather than steamed in your microwave in 6 minutes or less, depending on the contents.

Below is a description of each of the meals that are currently available, and our opinion in the italics:

  • SHRIMP Bowtie Scampi: This entree combines All Natural tender Shrimp (#1 seafood choice in USA) in a low fat scampi sauce – Delicate yet creamy blend of heart healthy olive oil, garlic and hints of butter, lemon, and zesty Italian herbs reminiscent of old Italy –  perfectly paired with Whole wheat bowtie pasta, broccoli florets and red & yellow peppers. This one, I think, was the best out of all of them. The shrimp cooked well, and the flavors were good. It is very pepper-y, but I love pepper.
  • SALMON Florentine Alfredo:  This entree combines an All Natural Wild Salmon portion (Pink, Flaky Meat and high in Omega-3) in a very light, mild lemon citrus sauce made with extra virgin olive oil, Parmesan cheese, garlic and onion with hints of butter and cream —  paired with whole wheat rotini pasta, green peas, crisp red peppers, and spinach.  The flavor profile is mild and fresh. The portions were a little small on the fish, but it cooked well, and it tasted pretty good. This one is probably going to be one of the more popular choices in the house.
  • SWAI Caribbean BBQ:  This entree combines an All Natural Swai portion (very mild, light & flaky whitefish) in a sweet and spicy mustard BBQ sauce (with hints of Apple Cider, cinnamon and bay) along with roasted potatoes, sweet yellow corn, and juicy pineapple chunks.  The flavor profile is fuller, sweet & spicy with a surprising Caribbean twist. We have not tasted this one yet.
  • TILAPIA Tango Mango:  This entree combines an All Natural Tilapia portion (very mild, light & flaky whitefish) in a sweet and tangy mango sauce (made wth chunks of ripened mango, green onion, cilantro with hints of red pepper & garlic) along with white rice, red pepper, sugar snap peas and crisp edamame beans.  The flavor profile is tangy, fresh with a hint of spice. I actually didn’t care much for this one. I’m not a huge tilapia fan, but I was willing to give it a try. The veggies and flavoring otherwise was really good. The mango was sweet, and it had just a hint of spice.
  • COD Mediterranean Medley: This entree combines an All Natural Cod portion (mild, flaky, whitefish staple) in a mediterranean sauce (rich, wholesome zesty sauce made with crushed tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, white onion, Italian olives, fresh herbs and paprika seasoning to bring out the fullest flavor) with whole wheat fettuccine, yellow peppers, green beans, zucchini, and capers. The fish turned out a little dry and tough, but the flavors were really good.

Now, we’ve tried most of these meals, and for the most part they have been pretty good. There are only a few complaints more about the product creation process rather than the product itself. I have always been told that Wild Caught fish is the best for us, so I was curious where the fish came from. For anyone else that is curious as to where the fish used in Delitefuls meals comes from, here it is:

  • Shrimp Bowtie Scampi (Farm Raised Shrimp from Thailand)
  • Salmon Florentine Alfredo (Wild Caught Salmon fished from Alaska – then sent to China for processing into portions then imported into USA from China – therefore Product of China as per Country of Origin ruling)
  • Tilapia Tango Mango (Farm Raised Tilapia from China)
  • Swai Caribbean BBQ (Farm Raised Swai from Vietnam)
  • Cod Mediterranean Medley (Wild Caught Cod fished from Pacific Ocean in USA waters – then sent to China for processing into portions – then imported into USA from China – therefore Product of China as per Country of Origin ruling)

I’m really curious as to why a fish that is wild caught in the USA is then exported, only to be imported again, rather than processed here in the USA.

They did tell me that the fish, once imported back into the USA is then processed into the full dinner entree, completed and packaged.

If you are interested in checking out the new Delitefuls meals, they are currently only available at Walmart and are priced at $5.48 per package. Not a bad price!

If anyone does try them, I’d love to know your opinion good or bad about it! Feel free to leave a comment below!
