Trying for another Christmas Miracle

Ok y’all… I need some help. A few months ago, I read a post from Anissa Mayhew saying that she and her hubby needed a new bed. Her bed has been around for a long time, is falling apart, and is not going to be much of a help to someone (Anissa) recovering from her stroke(s). She needs something that will help keep her body in proper positioning, etc… If you’ve been following her journey through recovery, you’ve see how much they’ve gone through, and can just imagine the bills they have had to figure out how to pay… I’ve tried getting them a new bed using my contacts through various brands, etc, but no one has been willing to help. I tried calling furniture stores in her area, and they all refer me to corporate, never to get a return phone call, or tell me that they’re sorry, they just don’t have the ability to give up a free bed… so here I am asking for your help. I know it’s the holidays, and it’s a hard time for everyone, but I’m hoping anyone will be able to donate something… whether it’s Today’s Starbucks Trip, or leftover pocket change from the end of the day, even just $1. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, is that the smallest donations help more than you know. When I was collecting for #CQRelief, we had donations as small as a quarter, and with the amount of people that donated, she ended up with over $4K. I want to be able to bring about a Christmas Miracle.. or even a New Year’s Miracle to the Mayhew family and try to help them get a new bed… I’m keeping the widget open until 1/31/2011. Below (and on the right hand sidebar) is a Chip In widget that you can use to donate via Paypal. Feel free to grab the code, and repost it.. By all means, please pass the word on via Twitter and/or Facebook if you can’t donate yourself. PS. if your donation doesn’t show up right away, don’t worry. Chipin says their widget updates every 5 mins… I do get an email for every donation.. So Thank you in advance for your help! Thanks to @Military_Mom for helping me out with this… We’ve decided we’re going for broke.. This is the bed we are going to try for.. . and if you donate more than $25 Shellie & I will both wear your logo on a shirt for a day at BlogHer ’11.

  1. I keep telling my family and myself that this is the year to just be thankful and pay it forward How can you thank people for the love that helped keep you alive?

I can never thank you, Shellie, everyone enough.

    Xoxo

  2. Is there a button that bloggers can put on their sidebars to drive traffic this way?
Great to see people helping one another. Good luck!!

  3. I am confused. Didn’t Sears give them a new washer and dryer so they could afford to buy themselves a new bed? I get that this couple has been through a lot, but when are they going to take care of themselves? The internet has given them a lot of money and I, for one, am done. What are they doing with all of it?

  4. Just donated $50 on behalf of TheMommyInsider.com and AtlantaMoms.com. I can’t imagine being in Anissa’s position and not having a good bed to rest and sleep in. I was in a car accident and have suffered from serious back issues since and know how important a good mattress is!

  5. Katy,

I’m not sure if you’ve had the chance to read up on Anissa’s family… By all means, check out Hope4Peyton.org, and see what they’ve been through. This is not Anissa’s first bout with strokes, their little one, Peyton, had cancer treatments, and then, Anissa suffered two strokes. Her treatments are not cheap. They’re a single income family. Anissa spent several MONTHS in the hospital, other care facilities and finally, outpatient therapy… The medications take a toll… I’m sure you can just imagine the money that has gone into taking care of everything. Sears didn’t give them laundry appliances just so they could buy a bed… They did it so they could function… and continue as normally as possible. I know that they are using any money donated to them to survive and provide necessities for their family…. I am proud to be a part of this, and wish I could do more for them.
You are welcome to donate, or help spread the word.. or not. That’s the beauty of Social Media..

  8. Hello. This is Sarah from Select Comfort (@SleepNumberSara on Twitter). We’d like to help by giving Anissa a discount to get her on her way to sleeping better. Can you email Anissa’s contact information to publicrelations@selectcomfort.com and we’ll work with her to ID the best solution? I’ll loop back to let you know where we land.

The outpouring from all of you online is wonderful to see. Anissa is truly blessed with a network of great friends.

    All the best.

    ~Sarah

  9. Could the people who donated please hear the outcome? It would be good to know if the money went for its intended purpose. When you don’t hear, you kind of wonder. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

  10. Vee- To my knowledge, they have not yet been able to purchase a bed. Sleep Number was not able to help them out, and they didn’t have enough to get the bed we were hoping to get for them. The money is still set aside, and I believe they have a bed picked out, it’s just been a matter of getting out and buying it. I’ll check in with Anissa and see how it’s going.
