  1. My now-husband thrilled and impressed me for our first Valentine’s Day by bringing my CAT a small ornate dish filled with sod, with grass standing several inches tall — and she absolutely LOVED it.

  2. Frugal Tip: Take advantage of your local video store. Enjoy a nice dinner that you’ve so lovingly prepared at home for your hubby and snuggle up in front of the tv in the dark on the couch to a romantic movie or even nice romantic music.

  3. One approach to a romantic evening nowadays involves letting our older son stay overnight with a friend, and enlisting our younger son into preparing a simple meal (Salmon with lemon, herbed rice, some green veggies, some chilled Crystal Light juice). Then greeting my wife with a smile when she gets home from work. Then we watch something relaxing on cable On-Demand, and the younger one falls asleep relatively easily… Of course, then my wife falls asleep easily too… Which is kinda nice, actually – at least until my arm gets numb.

  4. Frugal Valentine’s Idea: We take a photo of the two of us every Valentine’s Day and have two prints done. One we have in “our” album and the others I’m saving to do a Valentine’s picture collage of the two of us to have hanging on our wall.

  5. My frugal tip for V-day is to celebrate at home. It’s a lot cheaper than eating out. AND i always buy decorations after the holiday for the next year. Cheap dollar store decorations can be revamped for new uses (plus they are super cheap AFTER V-day)

  6. My frugal valentines day tip is to celebrate at home. Make your favorite dinner (or a crockpot meal if you don’t want to be working at dinner time). Make a yummy dessert–you can do this the day before if you want v-day off–just hide it from the kids and husband or you’ll be making another one!

  7. My frugal valentine’s idea is to shop together and plan your meal. Then you can turn on relaxing music and have fun making the meal together. It will be more relaxing then standing in line at a restaurant and save you money.

  8. My best idea would be to do something simple with that special someone… Get some groceries, make a special dinner with that favorite bottle of wine.

  9. My frugal Valentine’s idea includes the hubby plus kids. If you have a local Redbox ( vending machine to rent DVDs) you can rent a family movie for $1 that everyone can enjoy. Then plan a fun meal or snacks that the kids can help create and place in a picnic basket. Next spread a blanket in front of the TV and have a little picnic while watching the movie. After the movie everyone can exchange their home made Valentine Cards! Inexpensive yet fun!

  10. Just so you know I am still listening to the show as I am doing the other entries LOL.

My best frugal tip would be to stay at home, make a romantic dinner for your SO, and do something handmade for him/her. I am making Hubby a card, and also going to try my best to write a poem/letter about what he means to me. Cuddling up on the couch and watching a movie together would be the BEST gift ever.

  11. My best frugal St. Valentine’s idea is to either buy a GC on restaurant.com – they have regular promos when you can get one for next to nothing – or use dining Qs from the Entertainment Book – they also have Qs for cheap movie tickets ($6.50 in my area) if you want to go for dinner and a movie! Or, even cheaper – rent a DVD from Redbox with a free code and have a romantic dinner and a movie at home 😉

  12. I’d say you can’t get any more frugal than a home cooked meal, kids to bed early and a movie (Gotta love Redbox!!).

  13. My best frugal Valentine’s idea is sending out valentine’s cards instead of holiday photo cards. You can find some great deals, you don’t have to do it during the busy holiday month, and it cuts back on postage for both holidays. My family and friends were delighted to receive their update photo in February, after the holiday rush!

  14. i hope i got the word correct, my hearing is horrible! my frugal valentines idea is a strict NO GIFTS rule… as crazy as it sounds, it seems to work out great. relieves so much of the stress & makes everything a lot more relaxed and enjoyable.

  15. My best frugal tip is to write a love letter, and if you choose to give gifts, get each other something small that has a special meaning to you. I tend to spend less if I’m focused on something that has special meaning – it’s often better to create something or pull together less expensive elements.

  16. My best tip for Valentine’s Day may sound a bit corny but my son and I make kleenex tissue flowers for each other. I don’t know if you’ve ever done this, but it’s fun. Take a couple sheets of tissue (prefereably pink) and stack them on top of each other. Then accordian fold the entire stack and bind the center at the bottom where there is the fold. Then separate each layer of tissue and you can form a flower. You can also cut the edges with pinking shears before you separate the layers.

  17. My favorite frugal tip is to have a romantic evening in rather than going out – it’s always so crowded anyway! We choose a special recipe and cook together, then watch a movie on demand.

  18. Shop the day after Valentines Day for gifts for the kids for next year. It’s a great time to get those heart shaped school supplies and stuffed animals. I put them away for a year and then I can add candy etc later to complete the gift..

  19. My Frugal tip is something that My Then Boyfriend did for me one valentines day morning. He worked 3rd shift and went past my house on his way home about 25 minutes before I had to leave for work. Imagine my surprise when I went to get in my car and the ice and snow was scraped off my car was running, a new CD was playing in the Cd player and there were flowers and a card on the seat. He had stopped and did all of that on his way home from work for me. Wonderful man. It was the best Valentines Day Present I ever received. We ended up engaged, and then he passed away from cancer. Wonderful Wonderful Memories. Thanks.
    Have a Fantastic Day

  20. I wouldn’t ordinarily suggest something like this, except that Valentines Day is on a Saturday this year — a common day for State Lottery drawings.

Buy a couple of lottery tickets — and THINK of the potential results… Showing a bit of restraint (you didn’t blow more than four or five bucks), a bit of forethought (can’t win if you don’t play), a touch of out-of-the-ordinary romance (do NOT deface the tickets with hearts and flowers, but DO put them in with a card, right) and who knows — windfall profits never hurt!

(I wouldn’t forget the flowers, though, just in case — remember the odds!)

  21. Just posted a tweet on the ipod contest at twitter.com/secondstory. I’m not sure how to report the status report as someone did earlier, but if you go to my twitter, it’s right at the top. Thanks for this contest! I’m trying to win this for my 12-year-old granddaughter Mikela, who thinks ipod touches are amazing!

  22. A frugal Valentine’s tip: I live in Pensacola, Fla., and the azaleas are starting to bloom already. I’d recommend going to Bellingrath Gardens, near Mobile, Ala., to visit the hundreds of azaleas in bloom there and maybe have a sweet treat at the plantation house. If that’s not close to you, why not visit a garden center near you and pick out a tree or shrub that you can plant together and recall each spring as your blooming valentine?

  23. We make a nice dinner at home, take a walk, and rent a redbox. I also buy a box of valentines for my husband, write a little note in each one, then hide them around the house or in everyday items where I know he will find them.

  24. I make my wife dinner and red velvet cake her favorite. we like to watch old romance movies. Our library has a great selection so they are free!

  25. I’m a big fan of making gifts sentimental. . . anything homemade that has personal value. Also, a romantic candlelit homemade dinner

  26. Bake your Valentine’s favorite goodie and wrap it in color cellophane. Add some other fun stuff like soaps and body wash and make it a pampering basket.

  27. Frugal Valentine’s idea – shop for and cook dinner together, then go for a walk. Make the time to do it if you don’t already. If you do, make it a little more special by investing in some flowers for the table…and maybe a small bag of heart confetti.

  28. my idea for valentines day is make something cute or a small gesture. Anyone can buy expensive gifts, but my husband and I just celebrated our 8th anniversary on the 10th and I put a card and his favorite candy bar on his driver’s seat and then called him to go look in his car for something and there it was. I plan on doing the same dorky thing for Valentine’s day as well. Cheap and from the heart!!!!

  29. This Valentine’s we will be celebrating with a nice dinner and evening out. I also recommend doing fun things with the children for Valentine’s Day, such as making crafts, cookies, and just spending time together.
