Craft: Celebrate the Olympics with Team USA Wreath!

The 2014 Winter Olympics are here, and Walmart wants to know how you celebrate! We made a GO TEAM USA! Wreath here to hang on our front door for the Olympics! It was super easy, super inexpensive, and super fun! Kids can do it with a grownup’s help!

Here’s what you need!

Supplies

I went to my local Walmart and picked up a foam wreath form for around $4, Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Red, White & Blue,  9×12 Sheets of Felt for only 23¢ a piece, in Red, White & Blue. I already had my scissors, glue gun and glue sticks at home.

How you make it:

FoamGlue

1. Preheat  your hot glue gun. Use it on a smooth surface, like tile or something that will be easy clean up!

WrapStart

2. Measure out your distances for your stripes. On this wreath form, I measured out 13 sections of about 1.5″ for my Red and White stripes. I wanted 13 stripes, just like the flag. Start your yarn wrap with a dab of hot glue to secure it in place. Decide which part will be the front, and which part will be the back. You want to continue to glue on the same side so it’s less noticeable. I wrapped the Red & White yarn 20 times around, cut and glued. Keep going until your stripes are complete.

3. Once you’ve finished your Red and White stripes, complete the wreath with the Blue yarn! Start with a dab of glue and keep wrapping until it’s completely covered!

4. Here is my wreath completely covered in yarn. Next step is to add the flowers. I didn’t get a photo of it, but take your Red & White felt, and use a marker to draw on a flower shape. I did two of each. Alternate a larger flower and a smaller flower that will sit inside the larger one. Use the Blue felt to cut the center circle of each flower.

FirstFlower

5. Here is the first flower cut and glued onto the wreath. I decided to do this instead of stars just for time, and decorative-ness (yes that’s a word in my book).

Hanger

6. I took 3 strands of yarn, braided them, tied them in a loop, and used a good amount of hot glue to secure it to the back of the wreath to use as a hanger.

7. Here is my wreath, completely done! It’s going on our door after the Opening Ceremonies! GO TEAM USA!

Like I said, it’s super easy, and very inexpensive to make, and everything you need is available at your local Walmart store!

If you make anything like this wreath, I’d love to see what you come up with!! Share with me in the comments below!
